About
Ning Huang
Public Artist | Landscape Architect | Author
Ning Huang is a Canadian public artist, landscape architect, and author whose work explores the connections between sculpture, landscape, culture, and everyday experience.
With professional experience in Canada and China, he brings an understanding of public space, materials, construction, and human interaction to his artistic practice. His work invites people to encounter familiar places in unexpected ways, through play, gathering, discovery, and moments of reflection.
CAN STUDIO is Ning Huang’s independent creative practice, currently focused on public art and functional sculpture, alongside writing and publishing.

Art Rooted in Place
Ning’s work begins with the character of a place: its stories, geography, ecology, cultural associations, and patterns of everyday use. These observations become starting points for artworks that connect people with their surroundings.
A gateway can become a playground. A sculpture can offer a place to sit. A shade structure can change how people experience light, movement, and gathering.
He is particularly interested in the possibilities that emerge when an artwork becomes something people can inhabit, touch, use, and make their own.
Art+
Ning describes this approach as Art+: bringing artistic expression together with another dimension of public life.
His work explores combinations of sculpture and seating, art and play, gateways and storytelling, shade and gathering, and light and spatial experience. Each combination develops from the idea and setting of the individual work.
Alongside form and meaning, he considers accessibility, inclusion, durability, and maintenance as part of how an artwork welcomes people and continues to serve its setting over time. Humour, curiosity, and fun also have a place in this practice.
He is interested in public art as a form of physical social media: a shared setting where people meet, interact, take photographs, exchange stories, and create memories.

Landscape as a Foundation
Ning holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Guelph. His experience spans landscape architecture, urban design, parks, public spaces, and multidisciplinary projects in Canada and China.
His professional work extends from concept development through construction documentation, technical coordination, consultant management, procurement, and implementation. This experience supports his ability to develop an artistic idea in relation to its site and carry it through the practical demands of fabrication and installation.
Landscape architecture continues to inform his understanding of scale, movement, ecology, and the relationship between an artwork and the space around it.
Observation, Writing & Publishing
Writing is another expression of Ning’s interest in looking closely and making ideas accessible.
He is the author of Mastering Bare Branches: A Practical Guide to Winter Tree Identification. His One-Eye Method encourages readers to learn where to look, recognize distinctive visual clues, and use them to guide identification. His continuing work includes Winter Trees at a Glance and field-oriented educational resources.
His broader writing draws on public art, landscape architecture, and practical investigation. Across these subjects, a consistent process connects his work:
Observe carefully. Recognize patterns. Develop the idea. Share it clearly.
