Mastering Bare Branches
A Practical Guide to Winter Tree Identification in Eastern North America
Mastering Bare Branches grew from a practical problem: identifying deciduous trees when the most familiar clue, the leaf, is gone.
Rather than treating winter identification as a collection of isolated botanical details, the book develops a visual approach to recognizing trees through the clues that remain visible in winter: crown form, branching pattern, bark, twigs, buds, fruit, seeds and persistent leaves.
At the centre of the book is Ning Huang’s One-Eye Method, an approach to learning where to look, recognizing strong visual clues, narrowing possibilities and confirming identification in the field.
The book is intended for landscape architects, arborists, students, municipal staff, naturalists and anyone interested in becoming more confident identifying trees during the leafless season.
